FAQ: Aesthetic dentistry
Gum discolorations

Question: The surrounding gum of a crown discolored over time. Can you do anything about it?

Answer: Most of the time, discoloration occurs when the ion of the metal used for the inside or core of the crown starts to penetrate the gum. Treatment includes replacing the crown with a crown without a silver ion, such as a pure gold lining (GES), zirconia-based all-ceramic, or fiber-resin core crown.

Gum recession

Question: I got a crown a couple of years ago. The gum surrounding the crown is now recessed. Is there any treatment for it?

Answer: In many cases, gum recession is caused by a silver ion used for the inside of a crown. If it is the cause, replacing the crown with a pure gold lining (GES) or zirconia-based all-ceramic crown will improve the condition.

Endodontic treatment

Question: I have a gum boil around the crown that I got a couple of years ago. What is a cause and treatment?

Answer: I have to examine your mouth, but it is possible that you have some infection at the root. If it is the case, your condition will get better after having endodontic treatment.

Swollen gum

Question: The gum is swelling around the crown that I got a couple of years ago. What is a cause and treatment?

Answer: There are several possible causes. The problem could stem from unfitting the crown, a root disease or malocclusion. Treatment varies by a cause of the gum inflammation. For example, if it is resulted from a problem with the root, an endodontic treatment has to be done.
